   Lesson From History
Paying Tribute to Our Sovereign God

Bette Church, GRFRWC

Today we are told by many of our leaders that we are NOT a Christian nation- not a Biblically based government - and never have been - but history proves differently.

About the Declaration of Independence and the heroes that signed it - What did they have to say?

After each of the delegates of the Continental Congress had signed the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Adams recorded:  "We have this day restored the Sovereign to Whom ALL Men ought to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven and from the rising to the setting of the sun - let His Kingdom come.

July 3rd The Continental Congress recorded John Adams proclamation:  The Continental Congress, July 19, 1 776 on the day following the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, the ringing of the Liberty Bell moved to establish prayer as a Daily Part of This new nation.

The Continental Congress authorized the army to provide chaplains for Their troops. ON that same day, George Washington, the Commander in-Chief issued the order to appoint chaplains to every regiment.

July 3rd, the Continental Congress recorded John Adams proclamation:

"The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America to be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival, commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by Solemn acts of devotion to God almighty from one end of the continent to the other - from this time forward forever more."

The joy of our fore fathers, when they had won their freedom from tyranny - their first thanks in writing was to the sovereign King of Kings and Lords of Lords When they wrote what I read in the beginning - We have this day restored the Sovereign - to whom all men ought to Be obedient, from the rising to the setting of the suns - let his kingdom come.

May this same obedience be in all of us and follow the remarkable character. Let us all together give praise and thanks giving To our Sovereign, as we say the Lord's prayer. Together.

Dwight Eisenhower  1890-1969

34th President of the United States of America and was Supreme Commander of Allied Forces during WWII

*On the night of July 10, 1943, General Eisenhower observed the armada of 3000 naval ships that he had ordered to battle, sailing from Malta to the shores of Sicily.  He saluted his men, then bowed his head in prayer.  To the officer next to him, he commented:  "There comes a time when you've used your brains, your training, your Technical skills, and the die is cast.  And the events are in the hands of God, and there you have to leave them."

June 14, 1954 President Eisenhower supported and signed into law the Congressional Act Joint Resolution 243 which added the phrase "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance.  *In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future; in this way  we shall constantly strengthen those Spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource in peace and war."  President Eisenhower then stood on the steps of the Capitol Building and recited the Pledge of Allegiance with the phrase "one nation under God" for the first time.

*The phrase "under God" was taken from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth."

In 1954, President Eisenhower said:  "The purpose of a devout and united people was set forth in the pages of the Bible; (1) to live in freedom (2) to work in a prosperous land and (3) to obey the commandment of God...  This Biblical story of the Promised land inspired the founders of America...It continues to inspire us...
